Gerbils are gentle, social and enjoy the companionship of another gerbil (house only same gender pairs who were raised together), as well as interaction with their Pet Parents. Gerbils have strong hind legs and are powerful jumpers. They are curious and not easily startled, so they're great for busy, active households.

Things to remember

Lifting & handling
Handle your gerbil gently -- scoop her up in both hands and hold her with cupped hands so she feels safe and secure. Remember to never lift or grip her by her tail.

Special needs
Your gerbil's front teeth never stop growing, so she needs lots of healthy things to chew on like treat sticks and chews.

To prevent tail injury, gerbils should only run on a solid-surface exercise wheel.

Choose a fortified diet appropriate for gerbils.

Your gerbil needs a well-ventilated home with a solid floor, large enough for a food dish and water bottle and a hiding area (if one isn't built in). There should be plenty of room for all cage accessories, and for her to move around freely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Pets, Escape Artists I always had hamsters before but then decided I wanted a change so I got a pair of gerbils. They were amazingly tame and easy to handle. They are quite lively and love to be out and about. Downside is that they’re escape artists, they’re much smarter than my hamsters were and found out how to unscrew the cap you connect tubes to and would escape. I ended up buying a sturdy wire cage and haven’t had problems since. Make sure to put them in a ball when they’re out and supervise them!! One of my boys would unscrew the ball lid to escape. But overall such fun and awesome pets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great pet to own The gerbil I own has been a wonderful pet, she does have a lot of energy. (I wouldn't recommend for young children) All in all, I would definitely recommend people to own such fantastic animals. (With some love and training they become tame, so be patient with them.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gotta love 'em! I have had gerbils for about 15 years now, and I can highly recommend them as pets! They are social -- when I come home they actually come out to greet me -- never bite unless afraid or mishandled -- and are not solely nocturnal, so they are often awake during the day. I've found most of my gerbils to be awake and asleep on about 4-5 hour intervals. They'll be awake 4 or 5 hours, then asleep the same. But if they're asleep and I call them, they'll usually come out to see what's going on. And they invariably come out when company comes to see what's happening and who's here! With gentle handling they will learn to sit on your hand, your shoulder, etc., and make wonderful pets. They deserve the place hamsters seem to have! Don't be turned off by their cute tails! They are light and covered with hair, unlike rat tails. Their only cons: they are susceptible to human colds and can get sick -- and live only about 3 years. I wish they lived longer! Oh, and as for messiness - they don't drink much because they are originally desert animals, so mostly they have dry little pellets for stool that have little odor and don't urinate often because they don't drink much. But you always have to have water and food there for them, of course!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highest Quality Gerbil I've Owned I've had many gerbils, and have done lots of research on them. I understand that breeders are the preferred place to buy a "healthy" gerbil, but I've been pleased with my little Rue. She's living a long and healthy life, going on 2 1/2 years while still looking young. She got along nicely with the other female gerbil I had bought at another place who never was nearly as healthy, but still was friendly. Sadly Rue is living by herself, but still seems happy, active, and curious! I've never had a better girl!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Furry and friendly, but comparable to Houdini They are so cute and friendly. I purchased two adorable little girls a few weeks ago. They do go through phases where they will nibble on me, but it doesn't hurt and it's only for about a day out of two weeks. They are never really awake or asleep at the same time each day/night, so some nights it will be silent and others I will hear them running around. They like to redecorate the tank, so whatever setup you have, expect it to end up being completely different the next day. Unfortunately one of the two gerbils had been obsessed with finding a way out. She hasn't yet, but she has figured out a way to squeeze herself between the top of the water bottle and the mesh lid to the tank. She is the only gerbil out of the two who does this, and I think this is more of a personal behavior issue rather than an issue for all gerbils. They climb up my arm and sit on my hands, and after doing this for about a week, they've reduced the amount that they have peed and pooped in my hand. All in all, they are great small pets. They're friendly, they aren't noisy, they don't fight, and they're easy to care for. However, I would watch for behavioral issues. Also, make sure the tank (or cage) is very secure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing, Lovable, Hilarious Pets As my first gerbils, these are above great. First day I got them, they already completely trusted me. They climbed into my hand and all over me, and didn't even mind if I picked them right up from under them. They're also really funny if you give them one treat - one will snatch it and turn it's back to the other so it can't have any. It's amusing to watch them wrestle over it. I highly recommend this amazing pet. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The sweetest small rodents I have wanted Gerbils for as long as I can remember because they remind me of squirrels. I just got two females from the same litter and they are incredibly smart. Working on hand training them but they are very trusting. I had hamsters growing up and they were big time biters - I bled many times from bites from them. Gerbils are not at all like them! One of my girls nibbles every now and then but never hard enough to hurt. It says they are active during the day but I find that not to be 100% true. Mine are more active at night, running on the wheel for hours. Be careful as they are bug chewers!!! I got one of the CritterTrail cages for them and they have destroyed the plastic food dish that came with it.
