Land hermit crabs are fun, fascinating little creatures that make great pets for your home or classroom. They are easy and economical to care for and their crabby antics like climbing, digging, molting and shell switching are as entertaining as they are educational.

Despite the fact that they are indeed crabs, hermit crabs are actually quite docile and can be handled by their Pet Parents. They are anything but hermits and enjoy the company of other "hermies." And they love toys! Hermit crabs love to climb on just about anything and decorating your new friend's"crabitat" will make for a fun family or class project.

These docile pets will allow themselves to be handled. They will not pinch unless they feel threatened. Hermit crabs are social and can be kept in groups.

This means they need to shed their outer skin in order to grow.

Never drop
A hermit crab's abdomen is very soft. Dropping them onto a hard surface will cause severe injuries or death.

After molting, crabs are extremely vulnerable because their bodies are soft and pliable. Isolate them from other crabs during this time.

Staple diet
Some crabs' claws are not big enough to grab on to pellet-type food. Therefore, you should feed them one teaspoon of prepared food in powdered form. If pellets are the only available option, crush them into powder.

Water containers
The right drinking water container is very important to the health ofyour crab. Since land hermit crabs are extremely sensitive to metal, be sure yours is a non-metallic, non-porous container. Also, be sure your container is not too deep as they like to drag themselves into the water dish and just sit. If you have both large and small crabs, place a natural sea sponge in the middle of the dish so there is something for the smaller crabs to grab on to should they stumble in and be unable to get out.

A good rule of thumb is one gallon of habitat space for every two crabs. Be sure there is enough room in their habitat for them to move around without constantly stepping on each other.

Provide the crabs with a hiding shelter to sleep in during the day.

Shells - Fancy Crab Shells Vary in Color.
Provide at least two larger extra shells of varying sizes for your crab. Do not be alarmed if your crab changes its shell as often as every two days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome if treated properly. I bought 2 fancies around Christmas time, and they are both great pets with very different personalities. Given the right care these crabs are amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love My Crabs I've been keeping crabs for a while now and the ones I have bought here have done stupendously. They're happy and healthy when they come home from the store and are well cared for there. I have purchased three from here so far an will continue to come back. Unfortunately some of the associates don't know of the proper care for them and sell misinformation but that is not the fault of the crabs. Love them. <3

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hermit's make great friends hermit crabs make amazing pets if they are properly harvested and well taken care of I found that some of the information provided by Petsmart was a bit off for what most would consider ideal care but with proper research you can spend up to 30 years with them

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I personally like the fancy hermit crabs and normal hermit crabs the same, so I'd give both a 5 star. The only thing I wish pet smart would do is stock more normal ones because they are cheaper but only a few dollars so that is fine. I know the pet smart near me doesn't sell their hermit crabs in separate tanks or in painted shells which is good, although it doesn't matter if they are in different tanks because its easy to tell the difference in shell. I also prefer these to the kind you get at the beach because they live longer and are in better care.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Require more care than you may assume! Hermit crabs require so much more care than many people think! They need an environment with very high humidity (which is virtually impossible to achieve in a wire cage like they are commonly seen in at pet stores), their substrate should be soil (5 inches deep) so they can burrow and molt in), and they should be provided with many different types and sizes of extra shells. They should be housed in an actual glass aquarium..10 gallon order to maintain the humidity level they need. Most people sadly do not understand the care hermit crabs need to live long, healthy, & happy lives..but instead they are left thrown into small wire cages that suffocate them to death (due to the poor humidity level). Please do your research before purchasing a hermit crab....extensive research! Many pet stores do not advertise the proper care needed to house and own hermit crabs.
