Ask a store associate for details. These fascinating fish are livebearers who can rapidly reproduce in a community aquarium because they give birth to babies, rather than laying eggs. To aid in survival, provide hiding spaces for baby fish. Guppies are omnivores, which mean they eat both plant and animal matter, including small live foods and certain vegetables.

You will see your guppy swimming in the middle and at the top of your aquarium. To create a beautiful aquarium environment, be sure to add some bottom swimmers as well. Ask a PetSmart associate to help you choose.

Things to remember

Adding fish
Whether you're just starting your aquarium or introducing new fish to your tank, don't forget to add only 1-3 at a time.

Nutrition
Choose a vegetable-based flake or pellet food. Feed according to the directions on the packaging.

Specialty foods
Vary their diet by including frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex worms and other small worms, mosquito larvae and daphnia. Always remember to thaw frozen foods before feeding.

Frequent feedings
For optimum health, feed your livebearers as much food as they will consume in 1-3 minutes, twice a day. You can alternate between regular staple diet feedings and 2-4 meals per week of a specialty food.

Aquarium
Livebearers should be kept in a large aquarium, with surface area being more important than depth. Minimum aquarium size should be 10 gallons. A good rule of thumb is one gallon of water for every one inch of full-grown fish.

Décor
Decorate their aquarium with lots of live, bunch plants. Be sure to place them on the sides and back of the aquarium so they'll have enough space to swim in the center.

Filtration
Livebearers need well-oxygenated water, but do not like forceful water motion.

Salt
Mollies require a small amount of salt in their aquarium. Add two teaspoons of aquarium salt per gallon of water This will not harm other types of fish living in the aquarium.

Fish compatibility
Livebearers can share their aquarium with other tropical community fish of similar size and temperament, as long as they share similar water requirements

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hardy fish, but breeds like crazy!! I used to have 5 guppies total. 3 of them have since died. I have 1 male and 1 female remaining. The female just gave birth about 2-3 weeks ago and shes already pregnant again!!! I put her in a different tank before she gave birth then after I put her back in with the others. As far as I know this was her first pregnancy and I've got about 12 babies!! If you don't want to breed them make sure you don't get males or else they will just keep on breeding!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!!! I love these guys, they are the best!!! They are the coolest and they look amazing. They are just so friendly. If you want an easy fish to take care of, this is right for you. (ps, I have a five gallon tank and I have three guppies and two albino catfish.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Prolific These guppies are very hardy and tend to withstand many conditions. It's hard not to overstock due to their personality and beauty, but they are prolific breeders and they leave quite a mess "behind". I started off with 5, they breed and breed, eventually having 16 adult guppies which have had well over 600 fry. Just be prepared on what you will do with all the fry, whether you let the parents pick them off, use the fry as feeders or give them away. Most pet stores will not take them so be prepared.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought two females and one male, so I thought. As I looked closer and learned how to tell the difference between a male and female, I realized that I had two males (one of which was in the female tank) and one female (who was pregnant upon purchase). They are very active and come to the glass when they see someone. Never seem to get their fill of food. Great fish for kids.
