Despite their name and its connotations, sharks are extremely peaceful (except for red-tailed sharks) and live best in a community aquarium with fish of the same disposition. In fact, they are not really sharks and actually belong to the minnow family. It is their upright dorsal fin that gives them a shark-like appearance.

While most fish tend to stay at a certain level of the aquarium, you will see your shark swimming at the bottom, middle and top of your tank. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plant and animal matter, including prepared foods, small live foods and certain vegetables. Sharks are active swimmers and need a large tank that is long rather than tall. A good rule of thumb is one gallon of water for every one inch of full-grown fish.

Staple diet
Sharks will eat a wide variety of flake, frozen and freeze-dried foods as well as small, live foods, including tubifex worms, daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworms and brine shrimp.

To boost your sharks' overall health, supplement their diet with vegetable matter, such as fresh, sliced zucchini, romaine lettuce as well as canned or frozen peas.

Decorate their tank with plastic plants (they'll destroy live plants), but be sure to place them on the sides and back of the aquarium so they'll have enough space to swim in the center.

Fish compatibility
Sharks can share their aquarium with fish of the same size and temperament.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and fun I bought two of these silver tipped sharks from petsmart a few weeks ago for my newly established 55 gallon tank and I love them. I love watching them, they don’t swim away in fear they just continue doing their thing. It’s funny to watch their most common habit of swimming around on one side of the tank together in a circle around the top and as they swim across the top back towards a panel of glass they often swim upside down. I bought a pleco at the same time and he has started sharing in their swim cycle it’s amazing. They are the only ones in the tank as their max sizes add up to 48 inches so 48 gallons are called for, as I do not want to risk them dying or getting sick. I’m sure I’ll even upgrade them once they are full grown.
