Should I Feed My Cat Wet or Dry Food?

The moist choice can be just as good for kitty

Overview

Consider this your crash-course in a few myth busters about wet food for cats. Some outdated beliefs say it causes tooth decay, or that it’s not as nutritious as kibble. But it may be time to rethink those assumptions.

The tooth truth

Pet studies have found little difference in the dental health of pets that eat wet food compared to those who eat dry food. In fact when it comes to dental health, not all dry foods are created equal. Only formulas with a Veterinary Oral Health Council seal have been clinically shown to help oral health.

Whether your cat prefers wet food, dry food or a little of both, preventive dental care is the best way to keep your pet’s teeth in good shape.

The benefits of wet food

Quality wet food is as rich in nutrients as quality dry food. These days there’s a wet-food formula for nearly every feline diet including organic, novel protein, weight-maintenance, sensitive-stomach and more.

Wet food boasts some unique benefits too:

  • It has higher moisture content, which helps keep kitty hydrated and may lower the chance of urinary-tract problems.
  • Wet food is often more appealing to finicky eaters.
