I have used this substrate for my captive box turtle for about a year... I had been pleased with it, as it holds moisture well in the arid desert environment in which I live and doesn't carry odors, as well as being simple to moisten, HOWEVER, shortly after the last time I replaced the substrate will fresh material, I began to see tiny bugs crawling in it.... within days, the bedding was LOADED with an infestation of Bark Lice...meaning the substrate was infested before I opened it... I consulted a pest control professional, who positively identified the insects and agreed that the infestation occurred before the material was brought into my home. Thankfully these pests, who live under decaying bark in forests, do not infest or bite humans or reptiles but they are a huge nuisance and difficult to eradicate... though they don't actually bite, they cannot be pleasant to live among, especially because their favorite place is in the turtle's food and water bowls. I sure wouldn't want them in MY food or water. As far as eliminating them, options are limited, as one obviously cannot exterminate the turtle or the grandchildren. Please monitor your product for these kinds of problems... no one wants an infestation of Bark Lice.

I use this substrate in my ball pythons cage. I had trouble keeping the humidity up and this worked extremely well with that.
